INTRODUCTION TO CRITICAL REASONING

Critical Reasoning contains around third of verbal section. It is very important for one to master CR to score high in verbal section.

Below are the major types of question you will encounter in CR –

1) Strengthen the argument

The question from this question type will ask you how the argument could be strengthened. As with any other question in the verbal section, you will have 5 options to choose from. You should choose the option that strengthened the argument more than any other option.

Common word used in question – Strengthen the argument, supports the argument

2) Weaken the argument

The question from this question type will ask you how the argument could be weakened.

Common words used in question – Weaken the argument, weakens the conclusion, cast most doubt on.

3) Inference Question

The question from this question type will ask you to infer the statement that is most supported by the argument provided.

Common words used in question – what can be inferred from the argument, what could be stated from the argument.

4) Bold face question

In this question type, some part of the argument will be highlighted and you will be asked to specify the function of the highlighted part. It is absolutely critical to understand how the argument is created to answer this type of questions.

These questions are easy to identify as part of the arguments are highlighted.

5) Paradox question / Resolve the conflict question

The question from this question type will give you seemingly conflicting statement and you will be asked to choose the statement that solves the conflict.

Common words used in question – Resolves the paradox, resolves the conflict, reconciles the discrepancies, and explain the paradox.
